{"id":8895,"date":"2020-07-23T10:11:12","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T00:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/?p=8895"},"modified":"2020-07-23T10:34:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T00:34:05","slug":"very-strong-motivation-for-local-scale-reef-stewardship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/2020\/07\/23\/very-strong-motivation-for-local-scale-reef-stewardship\/","title":{"rendered":"Very strong motivation for local-scale reef stewardship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traditional Owners, citizen scientists and major reef tourism operators are motivated to restore and maintain coral ecosystems at their own sites, not just for economic or cultural reasons but also out of a real desire to improve the health of their patch of the Great Barrier Reef.\u00a0These are the findings of a number of recent Tropical Water Quality\u00a0Hub research projects, which looked at the attitudes of both <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gbzCiQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Indigenous<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2CLnia9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tourism<\/a> <\/strong>stakeholders in terms of engagement in reef restoration and tourism activities.\u00a0While acknowledging that slowing climate change is essential for the reef\u2019s ongoing health, major tourism operators feel responsibility to be good stewards, and Traditional Owners have cultural responsibilities to look after their sea country.
