Mitigating this erosion is therefore\u00a0key to improving water quality in Australia\u2019s tropical marine ecosystems. In late July the world\u2019s experts on gully erosion, including two research teams from the NESP Tropical Water Quality Hub, met in Townsville for the 8th International Gully Erosion Symposium, the first time the event had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. Both Associate Professor Andrew Brooks from Griffith University, whose <a title=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=f2a59a3d11&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" href=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=f2a59a3d11&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NESP TWQ project <\/a>improves our capacity to map and monitor gully erosion, and Dr Rebecca Bartley from CSIRO, whose<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=fd666d580c&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> NESP TWQ project <\/a>evaluates the effectiveness of gully remediation efforts, delivered presentations at the Symposium.\u00a0Dr Bartley spoke about trialling different erosion mitigation techniques and said it was an excellent opportunity to access the global \u2018brains trust\u2019 on erosion. \u201cIt was great meeting and a key highlight was being able to talk to people from other parts of the world that have\u00a0a lot of experience working on remediating gullies,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ve provided some great insight and advice on gully erosion in the Great Barrier Reef context.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=de5bf8a9b4&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr Bartley\u2019s presentation<\/a> and <a title=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=cb25c1375c&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" href=\"https:\/\/environment.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d841a64839b7d68557961aef&amp;id=cb25c1375c&amp;e=ff0dfdaa9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assoc Prof Brooks\u2019 presentation<\/a> at the Gully Symposium are both available on the TWQ Hub website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Erosion from gullies is a major source of sediment impact on the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.
