{"id":6172,"date":"2019-03-06T15:10:22","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T05:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/?p=6172"},"modified":"2019-03-06T15:10:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T05:10:22","slug":"wetland-evaluation-helps-indigenous-business-outcomes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/2019\/03\/06\/wetland-evaluation-helps-indigenous-business-outcomes\/","title":{"rendered":"Wetland evaluation helps Indigenous business outcomes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2012, in an effort to combat invasive plant species on wetlands on their Country near Ingham, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mungallaaboriginaltours.com.au\/\">Mungalla Aboriginal Corporation<\/a>, owned by the Nywaigi Traditional Owners, removed an earthen bund wall isolating 230 hectares of wetland from saline tidal water. The effectiveness of their action was evaluated years later by <a href=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/project-3-3-2\/\">Dr Nathan Waltham for a NESP Tropical Water Quality Hub project<\/a>, and his findings \u2013 that the re-introduction of natural saline water to the wetland had drastically reduced the level of invasive plants and restored a healthy level of fish stocks to a previously \u2018dead\u2019 wetland ecosystem \u2013 are now being used by Mungalla Aboriginal Corporation in their tourism business, Mungalla Aboriginal Tours. \u201cWe do tours through this area and we can show customers how an area like this can be brought back to its natural state,\u201d said Mungalla Aboriginal Corporation director Jacob Cassady. \u201cEverything that comes out of the biodiversity and wetland research about the plant and fish species we explain to the tourists.
