{"id":6993,"date":"2020-01-10T11:06:39","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T01:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/?page_id=6993"},"modified":"2020-01-10T12:57:46","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T02:57:46","slug":"working-with-traditional-owners-to-turn-off-gully-erosion-for-improved-great-barrier-reef-water-quality","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/news-events\/e-newsletters-2\/january-2020\/working-with-traditional-owners-to-turn-off-gully-erosion-for-improved-great-barrier-reef-water-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"Working with Traditional Owners to \u2018turn off\u2019 gully erosion for improved Great Barrier Reef water quality"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7011\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7011 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Working-With.png 1949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo: Andrew Brookes<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gullies that start on the steep banks of rivers and cut into terraces or elevated floodplains (alluvial gullies) can carry huge amounts of sediment out to sea and are thus a major factor affecting the water quality of the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are no widely-accepted practices on how best to stabilise and rehabilitate these gullies, of which there are thousands in the GBR Catchment Area.<\/p>\n<p>Griffith University\u2019s Associate Professor Andrew Brooks is heading a <a href=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/round-3-projects\/project-3-1-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>NESP Tropical Water Quality Hub project<\/strong><\/a> to test the effectiveness of different techniques used for rehabilitating these alluvial gullies.\u00a0 Working with Cape York NRM, Greening Australia and the Queensland Government they are trialing a variety of methods including earthworks to reshape the gullies, and different soil stabilization strategies, such as gypsum application, mulching, rock capping, and revegetation, to dramatically reduce the sediment delivered from highly active gullies.<\/p>\n<p>Initial results from the first experimental sites at Crocodile Station, near Laura in Cape York, has demonstrated that a 0.6-hectare gully system with a total erosion rate of around 260 tonnes per year has been effectively \u2018turned off\u2019 after two years. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9xgngcr9Rv0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>this video of the works in progress<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s success has prompted the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC), who are the owners of Crocodile Station, to expand gully remediation works on the station beyond the trial sites.
