{"id":6447,"date":"2019-06-13T11:21:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T01:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/?page_id=6447"},"modified":"2019-06-18T11:53:26","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T01:53:26","slug":"port-development-guided-by-seagrass-light-threshold-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/news-events\/e-newsletters-2\/june-2019\/port-development-guided-by-seagrass-light-threshold-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Port development guided by seagrass light threshold research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research on the levels of light needed to sustain seagrass communities is being applied in infrastructure development in rapidly-growing coastal communities in Australia\u2019s north.<\/p>\n<p>Seagrass meadows are a vital yet often overlooked component of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem, providing food, shelter and breeding areas to many key species, in addition to acting as a major carbon sink. Reduced light reaching the seafloor \u2013 caused by, for example, increased sediment loads associated with coastal development and dredging \u2013 can have a negative effect on seagrass health.<\/p>\n<p>The Queensland Government used<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NESP-TWQ-3.3-FINAL-REPORTa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seagrass light threshold data developed under a NESP Tropical Water Quality Hub project<\/a><\/strong> as part of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/eisdocs.dsdip.qld.gov.au\/Cairns%20Shipping%20Development\/CGER\/cairns-shipping-development-project-coordinator-general-evaluation-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">environmental impact conditions needed to be met by proponents of the Cairns Shipping Development Project<\/a><\/strong>, due to start later in 2019.
