Photo by RRRC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The forum featured presentations from several key Tropical Water Quality Hub presentations including <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/round-2-projects\/project-2-1-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project 25 <\/a>(promoting behavioural change through fine-scale water quality monitoring)<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/round-3-projects\/project-3-1-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project 3.1.2 <\/a>(using Internet of Things technology to improve irrigation management)<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/round-2-projects\/project-2-1-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project 2.1.8 <\/a>(trialing enhanced efficiency fertilizers for reducing total nitrogen use)<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/index.php\/round-4-projects\/project-4-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Project 4.10<\/strong> <\/a><strong>(evaluating the potential of converting marginal cane land to wetlands)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Growers were also able to get their voices heard on subjects important to them including the delays between practice change (and associated risk) and seeing results in water quality improvement.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of the success of the forum\u2019s intent \u2013 to get farmers and water quality scientists talking to each other \u2013 was a discussion during a lunch break between Mossman grower Scott Fasano and Dr Peter Thorburn from CSIRO, who talked about wetland conversion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5650\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 400px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5650\" src=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nirtrogen-2-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nirtrogen-2-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nirtrogen-2-768x369.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nirtrogen-2-1024x492.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nesptropical.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nirtrogen-2.jpg 2197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Bringing people together &#8211; Grower Scott Fasano shakes hands with Dr Peter Thorburn from CSIRO. Photo by RRRC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was great [to talk to Dr Thorburn],\u201d said Mr Fasano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pulling out my phone to see my farm on Google Maps and pointing out spots on the property that would make good wetland.
