Indigenous people need a key role and say in the policies of the Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan (LTSP) but so far there has been a lack of effective engagement with Indigenous people on this framework.

An evaluation of the Traditional Owner targets identified in the Long Term Sustainability Plan, led by Melissa George of NAILSMA and Ro Hill from CSIRO, together with community members, identified a lack of process and governance in meeting the LTSP targets. A coordinated Indigenous framework developed to show how Indigenous participation in sea country management can be increased will involve building strength and capacity of local Indigenous land and sea management organisations, partnership frameworks with government and non-government organisations; and support for two-way engagement of information and knowledge generation.
